The
southern coast of Albania is an area overflowing with exquisite
ecological beauty. The region extends from the coast south-east
of Saranda, approximately 15 km long and 5 km wide, up to the Greek
border. This is a place of unique beauty, where mountains and the
ocean meet creating cliffs, grottos, caves, hillsides, harbors,
bays and some of the most intact natural areas; a place
where ecosystems thrive while encompassing several of the nation's
most significant archaeological sites.
Butrint natural park is of great
importance for the conservation of global biodiversity as it supports
16 endangered species of flora and 14 globally endangered species
of fauna.
The Butrint wetlands area is
composed by a tectonic lagoon of 1600 ha, known
as Lake Butrint, connected to the straits of Corfu by the Vivari
canal, surrounded by forested hills and mountains
and complemented by saltwater and freshwater marshlands.
